Organization and City Officials Honor Students at Barbara Jordan High School
Council Member Peter Brown among noted civil leaders who participated today in an Induction Ceremony honoring students as Ambassadors
Houston, TX – October 17, 2008 – The Barbara Jordan Endeavors Corp. (BJE) inducted over 30 students as ambassadors for the organization during a ceremony at the Barbara Jordan High School for Careers today from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
BJE recognized and commended students, both abled and disabled, as Ambassadors based on their academic excellence and their strong leadership qualities in the community. Each student will be eligible to receive a $1000 scholarship upon graduation.
Respected city officials and honorees were present and spoke at the event, including Houston City Council Member Peter Brown, Rosemary McGowen, Advisory Board Member Emeritus and sister of the late Barbara Jordan, and Barbara Curtis, author and minister. Ms. Curtis will be providing each inductee with a complimentary copy of her latest book: “Confessions of a Kept Woman – A Faith Journey to Peace, Purpose and Abundant Living.” Former BJE Ambassadors were also in attendance for the ceremony.
Additional speakers at the ceremony were Steven James from Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s office, who awarded BJE with a Certificate of Congressional Recognition, and Previn Jones from Council Member Jarvis Johnson’s office, who also presented the organization with a Certificate of Recognition for their continued commitment as an advocate for the disabled, in helping students fund their educational goals and providing employment opportunities for the disabled.
Especially touching were presentations from Zenova Williams, daughter of BJE founders, Thelma Scott and the late Otis Scott, who died of a heart attack during a Sunday morning worship service at Lakewood Church in April 2008, and longtime friend of the family, R.B. Williams, who warmed the crowd with stories of tribute to Mr. Scott.

The Induction Ceremony took place today at Barbara Jordan High School for Careers, located at 5800 Eastex Freeway in Houston.
